National Report Card: Ukraine
Ukraine is located in Eastern Europe with a southern border on the Black Sea. Fertile steppes and plains rise to the Carpathian mountains in the west. The Dneiper River bisects the landscape. In Ukraine most of the country is used for human activities, in its majority by rainfed agriculture.
The rarity of marine fish and mammals is also high. Challenges to biodiversity include air and water pollution; land degradation; deforestation; and radiation contamination from the 1986 Chornobyl accident.
