National Report Card: Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan is bordered by the Caucasus Mountains in the north, and its Apsheron Peninsula just into the Caspian Sea. Most of the country is used for human activities, in its majority by rainfed agriculture. Local scientists consider the Apsheron Peninsula and Caspian Sea to be ecologically devastated due to severe pollution of their air, soil, and water. Surface and underground water are threatened by oil spills, pesticides, toxic runoff, industrial wastewater, and agricultural runoff.
