Albania borders the Adriatic and Ionic seas in Southeastern Europe. It has a temperate climate, and its land is characterized by mountains, hills, and plains near the coast. In Albania most of the country is used for human activities, in its majority by rainfed agriculture. Challenges facing biodiversity in Albania include deforestation; soil erosion; water and air pollution; and a lack of resources for sound environmental management.
