National Report Card: Benin

Benin’s landscape is mostly flat plain, which rises to hills and low mountains, and a relatively small coastline along the southern Atlantic Ocean. In Benin most of the country is used for human activities, in its majority by rainfed agriculture. The rarity of marine fish and mammals is also high. Challenges to biodiversity in Benin include water pollution; wildlife poaching; deforestation; and desertification, which is accelerated by regular droughts.
