National Report Card: Romania
Romania’s southeast coast borders the Black Sea in Southern Europe. The Carpathian Mountains rise in its center, and the Transylvanian Alps cross the south. The mouth of the Danube River drains to the Atlantic Ocean from Romania’s coast. In Romania most of the country is used for human activities, in its majority by rainfed agriculture.
The rarity of marine fish and mammals is also high. Challenges to biodiversity include soil erosion and desertification; water pollution; air pollution; and contamination of the Danube River delta.
