Mauritius

Mauritius is an island group located in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Southeastern Africa. The primary island was created by volcanic activity. Mountains circle a central plateau, and coral reefs ring the coasts. Most of the country is used for human activities, in its majority by urban use. Mauritius has high biodiversity rarity of terrestrial land vertebrates at a global scale. When analysed as single taxons, the rarity of birds, mammals and reptiles is also high. Challengs to biodiversity include water pollution; reef degradation; soil erosion; and inadequate solid waste disposal.
