National Report Card: Belarus

Belarus is a landlocked nation, with more than 11,000 lakes. Most of the country is used for human activities, in its majority by rainfed agriculture. Challenges to biodiversity in Belarus include soil pollution from pesticide use. The southern region is also contaminated or recovering from the consequences of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident in Ukraine, which borders southern Belarus.
