Species rarity refers to species that live in a limited geographic area, as opposed to having a widespread range on earth. The more rare or range limited species a given area has, the higher that place’s species rarity. The term endemic, is a related concept that refers to a place being the only home for that species. Rarity should not be confused with abundance. Abundance refers to how many individuals are in a given population. A species may have a very small population that is spread over a very large area.
