Uzbekistan is a landlocked country in Central Asia, with shoreline along the Aral Sea in the northwest. The terrain is primarily desert, with valleys around the Amu Darya and other rivers. In Uzbekistan most of the country is used for human activities, in its majority by rangeland. Challenges to biodiversity include pollution and shrinkage of the Aral Sea; desertification; water pollution; soil salination and pollution from agricultural pesticides and nuclear processing.
