Mali is a landlocked country in Western Africa. Much of the country lies in the southern Saharan Desert, and terrain also includes sandy plains and savanna, with some rugged hills. In Mali most of the country is used for human activities, in its majority by rangeland. Challenges to biodiversity include deforestation; soil erosion; desertification; and water insecurity.
