National Report Card: Maldives
The Maldives comprise a group of 26 island atolls in the Indian Ocean. It lies atop a submarine ridge of volcanic mountains. In Maldives less than a quarter of the country is used for human activities, in its majority by urban use.
The rarity of marine fish and mammals is also high. Challenges to biodiversity include rising sea levels; depletion of freshwater aquifers; inadequate sewage treatment; and reef bleaching.
