National Report Card: Ireland
The Republic of Ireland comprises most of the island of Ireland in the North Atlantic Ocean (Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom, covers the remainder). Landscapes include plains and rolling hills with low mountains, as well as steep seaside cliffs. In Ireland most of the country is used for human activities, in its majority by rangeland.
The rarity of marine fish and mammals in Ireland is also high. Challenges to biodiversity include lake pollution from agricultural runoff; acid rain; and deforestation.
