The Humane Society of New York recently announced that E.O. Wilson was one of two recipients of their Humane Medal award for 2016. The announcement cited:
E.0. Wilson, for a lifetime of work; his pioneering efforts to protect the biodiversity of our planet. And, in recognition of his 32nd book, Half-Earth.
“Look closely at nature. Every species is a masterpiece, exquisitely adapted to the particular environment in which it has survived. Who are we to destroy or even diminish biodiversity?”—E.0. Wilson
Also receiving an award was:
Joel Sartore, for his Photo Ark project, 25-years in the making, with its goal of photographing and documenting all of the endangered species on our planet through his images. Half of those that are endangered face extinction by the end of the century.
Mr. Sartore, through his photographs, wants the public to care enough to save them while there is still time.
The award is not given annually. Past recipients include Dame Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, Henry Spira, Nick Brandt, Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick D.B.E. M.B.S., Peter Singer, and Richard Phibbs.
