Why are species important to the Half-Earth goal? – Half-Earth

“People sometimes ask why are wild animals and forests and jungles and that kind of things, why are they really important for humanity. That’s an easy one to answer. Think oxygen, to start.”

In this video, created by E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation and Half-Earth Project partner Esri following their 2018 conference, renowned biologist and naturalist E.O. Wilson explains that destroying species and ecosystems, even in part, leads to the destruction of the atmosphere that the plants in these systems create. These changes will be harmful to all life, including humans.

So what do we do about this? E.O. Wilson has proposed Half-Earth as the solution to this growing problem of species extinction, ecosystem deterioration and the accompanying threats to our planet.
