National Report Card: Marshall Islands
The Marshall Islands are located in the North Pacific Ocean, and they are composed of atolls and more than 1,200 islands. Prominent features include the world’s largest lagoon at Kwajalein Atoll, which is also a US missile testing site. Humans populate 22 atolls and 4 islands. In Marshall Islands less than a quarter of the country is used for human activities, in its majority by urban use.
The rarity of marine fish and mammals is also high. Challenges to biodiversity include water insecurity; water pollution; and sea level rise.
